🇿🇦 South Africa's main opposition party not ruling out deal with ANC

South Africa's second most popular party the Democratic Alliance (DA) would not rule out a deal with the ruling African National Congress should the ANC fail to get the majority it needs to retain power in May elections, its leader said.

Pollsters expect the ANC to lose its legislative majority on May 29.

If that happens, President Cyril Ramaphosa or a successor for the top job would be unable to stay on without a coalition, since South Africa's parliament elects the president.

"It would depend which ANC you're dealing with and what their programme of action is," DA leader John Steenhuisen said, declining to disclose whether any talks had already taken place.

"I'm not ruling out anything, depending on what the election results are."

🟨🟩 ANC attempt to block MK party struck down by court

The African National Congress took their ex-leader's party to the Electoral Court to stop them from using the ANC's military wing's name and likeness.

Ex-ANC leader and former president of South Africa Jacob Zuma is the face of the party and is expected to cut deep into the ANC's supporter base in the upcoming elections, especially in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Polling data suggests the ANC will lose its majority for the first time since 1994.

The court ordered that MK is allowed to contest the elections.
🇿🇦 South Africa’s National Assembly Backs Draft Expropriation Bill

Lawmakers from South Africa’s ruling African National Congress voted in favor of newly drafted legislation that would allow the government to seize land without compensation in the public interest.

The Expropriation Bill, considered by lawmakers just weeks before the country votes in elections on May 29 in which the ANC is at risk of losing its national majority, will now pass to President Cyril Ramaphosa, who must sign it for the draft to become law.

The draft bill was opposed by the main opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters, though for different reasons.

The DA claim the draft is unconstitutional and said they will urge Ramaphosa not to sign it. The EFF said it didn’t go far enough.

📝 Despite this bill being described as a "land expropriation" focused piece of legislation, the actual wording does not define what property means. In fact, Section 25 of the Constitution explicitly states that "property is not limited to land" and therefore anything that you own can and will be taken by the government if they choose to.

The bill also defines "public interest" as anything that can "redress the results of past racial discrimination" which, again, is such an empty statement that can be used to easily justify the removal of your property as it rests on very subjective claims.

🗳 The Independent Electoral Commission has removed Jacob Zuma from the MK party's candidate list

According to Section 47 of the Constitution, no person convicted for more than 12 months, without the option of a fine, is allowed to hold public office.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court in 2021.

The MK Party has previously threatened violence, if Zuma was barred from contesting the elections.

🇮🇱🇵🇸🇿🇦 Criminal complaint lodged against Benjamin Rattle, a South African serving in the Israeli military

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) has lodged a criminal complaint at Cape Town Central Police Station, calling for South African Benjamin Rattle, who is serving in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), to be prosecuted.

He posted repeatedly on Instagram stating that he was proud to be part of the IDF. One post showed a masked soldier with a light machine gun, standing in front of a bombed building and rubble in the Gaza Strip.

The PSC’s Usuf Chikte told GroundUp that the PSC had been working on the issue for some time. He said they had a list of more than 70 names which they had submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) but had so far been ignored.

⚡️🇿🇦 Former SA president Jacob Zuma cleared to run in upcoming elections

South Africa’s Electoral Court on Tuesday ruled that former President Jacob Zuma can run for office as a lawmaker in the upcoming election, overturning an earlier decision that had barred him from contesting the polls.

The decision paves the way for Zuma to run for president on behalf of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, a new political organization that he joined last year after denouncing the ruling African National Congress party that he once led.

The Independent Electoral Commission had earlier ruled that Zuma could not run for office due to his criminal record, after it received an objection against his candidature.

South Africa’s constitution does not allow people who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to more than 12 months in prison without the option of a fine to stand for elections as lawmakers.

Zuma was convicted and sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in 2021 for defying a court order to appear before a judicial commission probing corruption allegations in government and state-owned companies during his presidential term from 2009 to 2018.

However, in a brief court order released on Tuesday, the court announced that an appeal by Zuma and his party was successful and that the objection against his candidature had been dismissed.

📝 Today's decision by the court is one of two massive blows to the ruling ANC party which risks losing its majority.

They've unsuccessfully attempted to remove a popular rival that will cut deep into their voter base among Zulu voters, particularly in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

Parties that are looking to dethrone the ANC will be celebrating in secret despite their public disapproval of the decision.

🗳 ANC Support Plunges in South African Poll as Zuma Party Surges

Support for South Africa’s ruling African National Congress is plunging and a party backed by former President Jacob Zuma may become the country’s third-biggest after next month’s election, a new opinion poll shows.

The ANC, which has ruled South Africa since the end of apartheid, may garner just 37% support in the May 29 vote, while Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe Party, or MKP, may get 13% according to the poll.

Such a result may mean the ANC has to form a coalition with a large party in order to retain control of Africa’s biggest economy. Zuma’s decision to back the MKP has eaten away at the ANC’s support. He ruled the country from 2009 to 2018, when the ANC forced him from office.

The poll of 1,835 registered voters across the country also found that the main opposition Democratic Alliance would win 25% of vote, the Economic Freedom Fighters 11% and the Inkatha Freedom Party 5%. The Freedom Front Plus and Action South Africa would both get 2%, it showed.

📝Note that the polling data was done before yesterday's court decision.

🛢Nearly Half of South Africa's Refining Capacity Is Shut

Africa’s most industrialized nation has long relied on fuel from abroad, but demand has grown in recent years as a string of refineries suspended output.

The massive shortage means that 80% of the country's fuel requirements are met by imports.
